A guitar tuner is a simple device that allows you to tune your guitar to a specific pitch.  Most are battery powered, and the clip -on type is generally the most convenient and of course most popular.

The two most common categories of tuner are the chromatic and the newer polyphonic

Chromatic come in microphone, clip-on and pedal formats. Chromatic tuners will allow you to tune to every note in the chromatic scale, which is all 12 notes between octaves. They generally have fixed settings for guitar and bass, in standard tuning, and many also have options for dropped/alternate tunings as well.  Simple, straightforward and foolproof.

Polyphonic are a new type that will have a setting that when you strum and play all the strings at once, it will show you which are out of tune.  Of course you adjust them individually to the right pitch.
