Wapping Wharf Telecaster Bridge Tapped Pickup
Made by Oil City Pickups, Wapping Wharf has received some might reviews in some majestic places.
The Wapping Wharf is a tapped Telecaster replacement pickup with some real tricks up its sleeve. It started life as a regular HonkyTonk Angel bridge pickup, which is another of Oil City’s creations that is a take on early-50s Esquire and Broadcaster tones. The vintage period correct 43AWG wire is wound to provide a DC resistance rating of 10k, at which point the coil is tapped and wound up to 15k.
This may sound mighty heavy, but the final results produced a real thorougbred with tonal characteristics that will blow your mind.
"It’s a top-drawer Tele-style pickup with twangy but meaty lows and a harmonically complex treble response that cuts through without any hint whatsoever of shrillness. The string-to-string balance cannot be faulted and there’s a touch of microphony, adding acoustic `air’ without any squeal. Switching in the extra coil moves Wapping Wharf into the realms of a P90, winding out power chords and meaty solos."
