Distortion and overdrive effects are by far the most popular pedals and generally the first a guitarist will buy. In basic terms, an overdrive pedal is designed to artificially simulate a driven guitar signal, which in earlier days this would be achieved by turning the input level of the amp up to overload the power section and its output, thus creating a pleasing ‘overdriven’ tone. Pedals do essentially the same thing, with more or less of their own sound added into the mix depending on your choice of pedal.
